Is there a quick way to fix diabetes crisis?

-

Nearly 50% of Americans 20 and older have diabetes or pre-diabetes, according to federal health statistics.

Our country has become lazy, lethargic, inactive and gluttonous. I have never seen so many fat people in my life.

Self-indulgence and a lack of willpower and self-esteem are the characteristics of a country in decline.

Being overweight and at risk for diabetes are related to the “I can’t push away from the table” syndrome. I see people every day with fattening coffee drinks and junk food, and people who park their cars as close to the door as they can. Sad thing is that they are raising yet another generation of fat children who will become fat teens and, later, fat adults. Break the cycle. Exercise and stop eating so much.

I’m not sure how demonizing people who are in trouble healthwise improves the situation for anyone. Encouragement and exposure to the actual benefit of feeling better seems like a more productive path.

People assume getting healthy is simple for everyone, saying they just need to eat healthy and exercise often. That’s assuming everyone’s life is just like theirs. It’s similar to telling everyone “just go to college.” I’ve treated more obese people with heart disease, respiratory issues, diabetes and other problems than I can remember. People should get to know some of these overweight people. Then they’ll find the idea of weight loss being simple for everyone is ridiculous.

Processed food and grain products are a big part of the problem. Manufacturers should be held accountable for the processed foods in our stores.
