TONIGHT ON TV
AMERICAN MASTERS: JASCHA HEIFETZ: GOD’S FIDDLER PBS, 8 ET/PT (TIMES MAY VARY) Even many people who know nothing about classical music know the name Jascha Heifetz and know that he has often been called the greatest violinist of all time. Now American Masters explores his artistry and his life through interviews with violinists Heifetz influenced, including Itzhak Perlman, and, PBS says, through some never-before-aired home movies, including some shot in his Saint Petersburg home months before the Russian Revolution. BONES FOX, 8 ET/PT The things you learn from TV crime shows. Unless, of course, you already know there’s a cutthroat competitive world of minigolf, in which case this story about the murder of one of the sport’s big superstars won’t surprise you. Mini-golf madness, however, is not the only draw. Tonight’s outing also boasts a return guest appearance by Ryan O’Neal as Brennan’s dad, a former and perhaps future criminal. BACKSTROM
FOX, 9 ET/PT Backstrom (Rainn Wilson) investigates a performance-artinspired murder on this ratingstroubled series from Bones producer Hart Hanson. As much as I’ve enjoyed Bones over the years, neither the casting nor the tone of this series quite works for me. Still, should Backstrom beat the odds and survive, it will be easy to be happy for Hanson’s sake alone. If any Fox producer has earned a second shot, he has.
