A massive data breach compromised information of current and former federal employees, the Obama administration announced last week.

This latest case shows how bad things are in cybersecurity. But this vulnerability is not limited to the federal government. I have notices from Blue Cross Blue Shield about a data breach. Home Depot has been hacked, as has Target.

The private sector is having the same cybersecurity problems as the government and is being hacked left and right.

Any computer system can be hacked. It’s not necessarily that the government or private companies are being inept or careless. Even if you take all reasonable precautions, someone will still eventually find a way around them.

Should we blame China, accused of being behind the hacking, or ourselves for our inadequate protection?

Malith Perera

When the United States neglects science and technology, we can’t defend ourselves from cyberattacks.

We spy on our allies and citizens but let ourselves get soft and weak against our competitors. Shame on us, not China.

Jonathan Buttall

Spying has been going on since the beginning of time. This news is nothing new.

Taxpayer information was compromised recently via an IRS website, and now federal personnel records have been hacked.

Before that, Target, Home Depot and insurance companies were targets. Do we have any qualified people who are good at securing anything in this country?

Rudy Rau

Clearly, there is no privacy or security since the Internet came into existence.

Yet many people say we could not function without it. It can be convenient, but at a cost.
