‘Jurassic World’ eats the newbies alive
‘Terminator’ lands at No. 3; ‘Mike XXL’ misses its magic
There’s no wiping out these dinosaurs.
Jurassic World is anything but extinct, topping the box office for a fourth straight weekend with $30.9 million and stomping over the openings of Magic Mike XXL and Terminator Genisys, according to tracking firm Rentrak.
The prehistoric blockbuster raised its totals to $558.2 million in the USA and almost $1.4 billion worldwide. It passes The Dark Knight ($534.9 million) as the fourth-highest-grossing movie ever stateside.
“It’s not diminishing one bit as time goes on,” says Rentrak analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “It’s a testament to how strongly it’s resonating with audiences.”
Among the holiday newcomers, XXL lacked the magic of its 2012 predecessor. The heavily promoted male-stripper extravaganza earned just $12 million for the three-day Fourth of July weekend, good for fourth place. More troubling was the start of Terminator Genisys, which came in third with $28.7 million. The reboot of the sci-fi franchise may do little to fire up two planned sequels, although a higher international take could rectify that.
“Bringing (star) Arnold (Schwarzenegger) back was really smart, and Paramount did an effective job of marketing the film,” Dergarabedian says. But “it was a very competitive weekend.”
Pixar’s emotional Inside Out continued its third week at No. 2 with $30.1 million. Rounding out the top five, raunchy comedy Ted 2 scraped up $11 million. Final numbers are expected Monday.
