IF YOU WANT PERFECTLY IMPERFECT WAVES

After prepping the hair (we’ll get to that) he grabs his secret weapon: the somewhat scary-looking double-barrel curling iron. “Wrap your hair into a figure-8 around it to create uneven bends,” he says. Pro tip: When styling with this tool at home, remember to use the glove it comes with to avoid burning yourself.

THE SECRET INGREDIENTS FOR OLSEN-WORTHY WAVES

Townsend puts dry shampoo (he likes Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo, $3.99) on his clients’ roots, scrunches it in and shakes it out with his fingers. Then he grabs a texturizing paste (specifically Sally Hershberger’s 24K Superiority Complex Texturizing Paste, $40). “I take a little bit out of the jar, rub it in my hands, and then I just rake it through from chin length down.

“I live by this combination. The new beach texture that is such a trend right now is soft on top and piece-y on the bottom.”

IF YOU HAVE FINE HAIR

“Fine hair does not love a lot of product,” Townsend says. “It just can weight it down so easily. I really stick with dry shampoo.” His favorites for fine hair, like this one by R + Co. ($29), include a light wax. “It’s able to give you the benefit of the dry shampoo and piece-yness at the same time.”

IF YOU HAVE CURLY HAIR

Don’t forget to deep-condition! “Curly hair almost always wants moisture,” Townsend says. “I make conditioner for my girls. A cup of coconut oil with a tablespoon each of almond oil, jojoba oil and macadamia nut oil.”

TWO WORDS: SALT SPRAY

If you sample one new hair product this summer, make it salt spray. “I put a cream or lotion, like Dove’s Youthful Vitality Silk Crème ($5.99), on my hands, spray a salt spray (he recommends Sally Hershberger’s Salon Mineral Spray, $24) on hands, then rake the combination through the hair to distribute it evenly.” That way, he says, you

avoid crunchiness.

AND FINALLY: PREP, PREP, PREP

Last but not least, we have a humidity-buster for anyone scared for her next blowout: Living Proof No Frizz Weightless Styling Spray ($26). “You spray it in your hair before blow-dry,” Townsend says. “I use it quite a bit in the summer if I’m outside in a humid place, if we want the hair to remain perfect. I’ve used that on every type of hair imaginable.”
