Five stunning finishes

-

Five of the most spectacular finishes in college football history:

Agony in Ann Arbor (Saturday): With Michigan needing to do no more than get off a punt with 10 seconds left and then defend one play to wrap up a 23-21 win, disaster struck. Punter Blake O’Neill dropped the snap — nobody was even back to field it for Michigan State — and got swarmed by defenders. The ball landed in the arms of Spartans safety Jalen Watts-Jackson, who outran Michigan’s pursuing defenders to the end zone as time expired. Michigan State 27, Michigan 23

Kick Six (Nov. 30, 2013): With Alabama and Auburn tied at 28 and one second left, the Crimson Tide lined up for a 57-yard field goal try. Adam Griffith’s kick was short, and Auburn’s Chris Davis corralled it at the back of the end zone. Davis brought it out, sprinting 109 yards for an Auburn touchdown and clinching a spot in the Southeastern Conference championship game. Auburn 34, Alabama 28

Hail Flutie (Nov. 23, 1984): Doug Flutie and Boston College lined up at the Miami (Fla.) 48 with six seconds left. Flutie dropped back, rolled right and flung the pass from his own 37 ... the ball sailed over Miami defenders and found Gerard Phelan just across the goal line. Boston College 47, Miami (Fla.) 45

Statue of Liberty (Jan. 1, 2007): Boise State capped a 13-0 season in the Fiesta Bowl when coach Chris Petersen went for two in overtime and called the Statue of Liberty. QB Jared Zabransky faked the throw to the right and held the ball, then handed off left and underhanded to running back Ian Johnson, who streaked in for the winning points. Boise State 43, Oklahoma 42

The Play (Nov. 20, 1982): Stanford, leading 20-19 with four seconds left, squibbed the kickoff. California’s Kevin Moen started and ended the play, with (at least) four laterals in between and the Stanford band on the field. Moen smacked into a trombone player in the end zone. “Oh, the band is out on the field! He’s gonna go into the end zone! He got into the end zone!” Cal broadcaster Joe Starkey famously screamed. California 25, Stanford 20
