‘Star Wars’ trailer: Details and ‘destiny’

New footage gives fresh hints to restless devotees

It’s futile to resist new Star

Wars: The Force Awakens footage when it pops up, and now a Japanese trailer hints even more at what’s to come in the blockbuster-in-waiting.

Now, and the two fresh faces of the franchise, Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley), finally introduce themselves in some of the new scenes shown in the trailer.

The last trailer focused on small character revelations: Rey as a scavenger on the planet Jakku saying she was nobody, Finn wanting something to fight for, and the villainous Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) looking at Darth Vader’s mask and promising to finish what the old Sith lord started.

In the Japanese footage, though, he gets the extra line “I will fulfill our destiny,” which lends credence to the theory that he has some kind of personal stake in being bad and isn’t just a Sith fanboy. Another new shot has him looming over Rey, his lightsaber ready to strike at her neck and her looking scared.

The new trailer, like the previous one, opens on Rey, who increasingly looks as if she truly is the new face of Star Wars going forward. She meets the little droid BB-8 in the desert of Jakku, asking it where it came from, and after a few of its beeps, she replies, “I know all about waiting.” BB-8 asks her whom she’s waiting for — in robot-speak, of course — and Rey says, “For my family.” There is even more of a Luke Skywalker vibe from her in this trailer and even stronger evidence for the idea that she’s either the daughter of Luke or Princess Leia and Han Solo.

Carrie Fisher’s Leia has a quick cameo in some kind of war room, as does C-3PO — though we still don’t know why he has a red arm on his otherwise golden droid body. Plus there’s a new line of dialogue — seemingly it’s Lupita Nyong’o’s somewhat mysterious Maz Kanata intoning: “Hope is not lost today. It is found.” — that plays while Rey is emotional over a fallen body and John Williams’ old Force theme kicks in.

A downbeat ending perhaps, but one that suggests while there are new heroes and maybe new sacrifices, the light side of the Force is always strong even in the face of a rising, powerful evil.
