TONIGHT ON TV

- Robert Bianco

THE GRAMMY AWARDS CBS, 8 ET/5 PT In the deep, churning, seemingly endless sea that is televised award shows, the Grammys have somehow managed recently to hit a genre sweet spot: Present an award that actually matters — to artists and to careers — in a show that actually entertains. And it has done so by putting the emphasis on the performers, alone and in interesting combinations, with the added bonus of celebrities who can be counted on to do or wear something outrageous. LL Cool J once again hosts a ceremony that this year is scheduled to include performances by Adele, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Lady Gaga (who will salute David Bowie), the Eagles (who will salute Glenn Frey) and the cast of Hamilton.

MAJOR CRIMES

TNT, 9 ET/PT

Major Crimes returns with a new twist in its storytelling formula. The show will follow one case over five episodes, starting this week with the shooting of a woman and child that proves to be linked to a string of unsolved homicides.

BETTER CALL SAUL

AMC, 10 ET/PT

AMC caps a day-long run of Saul’s first season with the launch of the second. When we left Jimmy (the wonderful Bob Odenkirk), he was still dealing with his brother’s betrayal — but don’t count our Jimmy out. Like his show, he tends to exceed expectations.
