Course architect: The original architect was Ted Robinson. Ahead of the 1998 PGA Championship, the course underwent renovations led by Rees Jones. Course record: 65 by Greg Kraft when played as a par-70; 63 by Robert Allenby when played as a par-71. Championships: The 1998 PGA Championship won by Vijay Singh, the 2002 World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational won by Craig Perry and the 2010 U.S. Senior Open won by Bernhard Langer. Notable: Paul Runyan, two-time PGA champion and two-time PGA Senior champion, was the club’s first golf professional (1968-72). The winner of 29 events on the PGA Tour, Runyan was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1990. Quotable: “I think the best way to prepare for this course would have been to go to a big city, like New York, and maybe play down Fifth Avenue. … With the trees being so large and so close to the fairway, you immediately see the only shot you can possibly hit. And that’s straight down the middle,” two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen once said. KEY HOLES No. 1, par 4, 384 yards The hole demands an accurate drive to avoid trees on the right side of the fairway that will block approach shots and a bunker on the left side of the fairway that will block approaches. The green is protected by two front bunkers. No. 5, par 3, 163 yards Players will tee off through a tunnel of trees lining each side of the hole. A lake borders the right side of the green, and bunkers on the left and in back should be avoided. No. 12, par 4, 370 yards The fairway narrows about 250 yards from the tee where two bunkers await. No. 18, par 4, 421 yards The tee shot on the dogleg-left hole is uphill, and a line of trees and a large bunker penalize players who draw the ball too much. The two-tiered green is protected by three bunkers.
