RESCUED IMMIGRANTS ARRIVE IN LIBYAN CAPITAL
VERMONT GOVERNOR SENT BILL TO LEGALIZE MARIJUANA
The state of Vermont is poised to join the expanding number of states that have legalized the recreational use of marijuana with the Wednesday vote by the House of Representatives that will allow adults to possess and use a small amount of the drug next year.
The legislation, which passed the House by a vote of 79 to 66, was identical to a bill passed last week by the Senate that also sets up a commission to study the best way to regulate marijuana. The legislation is set to become law July 1, 2018.
The bill is now headed to the desk of Gov. Phil Scott. Spokeswoman Rebecca Kelley said after the vote that the governor is not philosophically opposed to legalizing marijuana, but he must be sure it meets certain public safety and health questions. BOOS DROWN OUT DEVOS’ COMMENCEMENT SPEECH
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos struggled to deliver her commencement speech at a historically black college Wednesday, as the crowd drowned out her words with roaring boos.
Her remarks at Bethune-Cookman University on the importance of education were overpowered by calls from the audience to “shut the (expletive) up” and “not a Wildcat,” the name of the university’s teams.
Jeers persisted throughout her 20-minute speech, when she was introduced and while she accepted an honorary degree.
At one point, university President Edison Jackson interrupted DeVos to warn students, “If this behavior continues, we can mail the degrees to you.” AIRLINE LAPTOP, ELECTRONICS BAN COULD BE EXPANDED
The U.S. ban on in-flight laptops and other large electronics could soon be extended to U.S.bound flights from Europe.
A ban is already in place for such devices on flights departing to the USA out of eight countries in the Middle East and Africa.
Now, that could be extended to include some European countries and possibly the United Kingdom, according to media reports. The move would prevent passengers from bringing devices larger than standard smartphones into the cabins of commercial flights to the United States.
CBS News cites “sources” in reporting Wednesday that “Department of Homeland Security officials are weighing the advantages of expanding the ban against disruptions it could cause.
