Books from the Bushes and other big names,
They can laugh about it now.
Jenna Bush Hager and her twin, Barbara Pierce Bush, have a joint memoir coming out this fall, and on Friday, the 35-year-old sisters recalled the glare of the headlines when their dad, George W. Bush, was president and they were caught drinking as underage college students.
“We always had each other. I had a partner in fun and a partner in crime, and I mean that quite literally,” Jenna recalled at a Manhattan restaurant.
“People magazine said, ‘Oops, they did it again!’ ” Barbara chimed in.
Then there was this famous New York Post banner headline from 2001: “‘Jenna and Tonic.’ I loved that one!” Jenna said.
The sisters also got a little teary as they read brief excerpts from their memoir, Sisters First: Stories From Our Wild and Wonderful Life (Grand Central, on sale Oct. 24).
The women’s wild days are behind them (as far as we know). Jenna is a married mother of two girls and a correspondent for NBC’s Today show. Barbara is CEO and co-founder of Global Health Corps, a non-profit organization that seeks to build the next generation of health leaders.
“People may think they know us in many ways, but we feel like some of the stereotypes about us are caricatures, and we can’t wait with this book to show what we’re like,” Jenna said.
