Your Say: Pence’s stunt

-

I respect Vice President Pence’s

decision to leave the 49ers-Colts game after some players took a knee during the national anthem. That was an easy call to make on his part.

The harder, more difficult decision would have been to stay for the game. The beauty of America is we can agree to disagree without being mean-spirited or disrespectful of one another. Last time I checked, the NFL players taking a knee were doing it to highlight injustice in this country. Their cause has nothing to do with disrespecting the flag or the anthem.

That said, I wish Pence had stayed for the game. If he had, he would have stood for the players’ constitutional right to protest peacefully, not some fiction about what it means to be a patriotic American.

I’m in complete shock that there are people who don’t see what Vice President Pence did for what it was, a completely contrived, poorly executed public relations stunt. Cheryl Myers

Thank you, Vice President Pence. You honored our flag, country and veterans during the national anthem. And you left afterwards to show your displeasure with the NFL players who dishonored all these things. David Swain

I hate to inform the non-discriminated against, but depending on how you’re treated in this country, the flag holds a different meaning.

Everyone seems to care more about a flag getting disrespected than a race of people. Do you honestly think these protests are for nothing? Sit-ins, marches and protest are supposed to make those unaffected uneasy. And apparently nothing else got your attention. If you have no idea why these protests are necessary, then you’re part of the problem. Naji Arrington
