A combination of ferocious winds and near-record low humidity keeps fueling the deadly wildfires that are scorching Northern California.

From what we know (and none of this comes as a surprise), these areas are very prone to wildfires, and people choose to live there anyway. They don’t care. I’m not about to get more upset about it than they do. If they’ve lost everything, they have no one to cry to but themselves. Dora Smith

Fires are not just caused by wind and dry conditions. If there is no lightning in the area then it was probably man-made. So go ahead and flick your cigarette butt out the window! When I see this, it infuriates me. Chris Dano

If you live near a wildfireprone area, buy a backpack for each person in your family, stock it and keep it near you.

How do people know a wildfire is close to their home and leave their houses unprepared? Ronald LaPrade

Wildfires and wood (trees and homes) certainly don’t play nice together. Hopefully, many of the missing people are still fleeing the infernos and will be discovered safe. In the last couple of months, there has been devastation in California, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands due to nature’s wrath. Add earthquakes in Mexico, and North America has hit a tragic trifecta. 2018 can’t come soon enough. Peter Fonseca

Have you ever driven past a brush fire and wondered how it started? Chances are it was from a cigarette. Unfortunately, most smokers wouldn’t even give it a thought. Mark Grudt

This happens over and over in this area. It’s a known condition of the climate there. Perhaps you shouldn’t make a place that’s prone to burn a habitat. Randy Leever
