Russian athletes appeal to CAS
A day after the International Olympic Committee issued a collective sanction against Russia, 22 athletes from the country have filed appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport for their individual sanctions stemming from doping at the Sochi Olympics. The appeals include nine athletes who claimed medals in Sochi. So far, the IOC’s Oswald Commission has sanctioned 25 athletes, resulting in the loss of 11 medals. The appeals were expected as the IOC commission, chaired by Denis Oswald, has issued sanctions over the previous month. All disqualifications come with a lifetime ban, a penalty that faces legal challenges as it contradicts prior CAS cases.
