New snowfall headed to the Northeast and Midwest

Salvo arrives as South recovers from rare storm

New snowfall is expected to sweep across the Northeast and upper Midwest early this week on the heels of a major winter storm that blanketed parts of the South and Mid-Atlantic.

The National Weather Service on Sunday issued winter weather advisories in connection with the expected snowfall for parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and other states.

Localized snow accumulations of up to a foot are expected from Monday to Wednesday in parts of the Northeast, according to National Weather Service predictions.

The new snowfall affecting northern states will follow Winter Storm Benji, which caused at least three deaths, led to hundreds of flight cancellations and left thousands without power as it moved through the South late last week.

The snow led to school closures and delayed openings Friday across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and other parts of the South. Jackson, Miss., reported its highest snowfall since 1982, the Clarion Ledger reported.

The storm left more than 250,000 people temporarily without power across the South, according to the Associated Press.

Two people were killed in Virginia late Friday when a Honda Civic struck a guardrail and spun into the path of a truck, the Associated Press reported. In Georgia, a man was killed after coming into contact with a downed power line.

Delta Air Lines said Friday that it had canceled 625 flights from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest airport. The airline resumed regular operations on Sunday.
