Opposing view: Alabama voted for the right party

- Tom Perez Tom Perez is the chair of the Democratic National Committee.

There is a blue wave sweeping the country.

Tuesday night’s victory is proof that when Democrats lead with our values, when we recruit great candidates like Doug Jones and support them by organizing and investing early, when we engage Millennial and African-American voters — especially African-American women, who are the backbone of our party — we can win anywhere.

Voters are rejecting Donald Trump and the Republican Party’s radical agenda and electing Democrats up and down the ballot. We have now flipped

33 state legislative seats from red to blue this year. And we’ve won in deepred districts that Trump carried a year ago, including three state legislative seats in Oklahoma, as well as critical races in New Hampshire and Florida.

This isn’t a coincidence. We’ve built this blue wave by investing and organizing. Just like we did in Virginia and New Jersey, the DNC invested in Doug Jones’ Senate campaign, putting nearly

$1 million into organizing efforts, Millennial and African-American engagement, mobilization and voter contact. And we deployed staff and paid for or- ganizers for get-out-the-vote across Alabama.

Our efforts contributed to more than 1.32 million phone calls and 325,000 doors knocked in the last seven weeks, as well as over 1 million texts to volunteers and voters in across the state.

This election wasn’t about right vs. left; it was about right vs. wrong. The people of Alabama voted for a good man and a civil rights champion to be their next U.S. senator. They voted for a Democratic Party that will have their back and always fight for working families and for what is right.

And they sent a loud and clear message to Donald Trump and the Republican Party: You can’t call yourself the party of family values as long as you’re willing to accept vile men like Roy Moore as members.

The Democratic Party’s values are the values of the American people. Tuesday night made clear that Donald Trump’s days are numbered, and that the new age of Democratic leadership is just beginning. We’ll be fighting every day to keep building this blue wave through 2018 and beyond. efforts
