YOUR SAY: 2017 YEAR-END REVIEWS

-

2017 was the year of Trump. President Trump has successfully strengthened our immigration and foreign policies, and our economy. Those are impressive achievements in only one year. But his greatest accomplishment was putting a constitutional originalist, Neil Gorsuch, on the Supreme Court. The remainder of his presidency could be disastrous, yet this would justify my vote for him in 2016. I hope Trump gets to appoint at least two more justices, safeguarding the Constitution for a generation.

Another highlight of Trump’s first year was his response to the violence that occurred in Charlottesville, Va. He strongly condemned the racism of the white nationalists and the violence perpetrated by both sides. Trump was exactly right on this issue. The news media was exactly wrong. David Swain Chesapeake, Va.

This is probably the worst year politically, other than the Richard Nixon years, that I have had the misfortune of living. The government, under this disgusting human being, is in shambles. The world is laughing at us, and Amer- icans are more divided than I have seen in my 69 years.

I am disgusted and ashamed to be an American. I fear for the country and its now fragile democracy. And I think that it may never be repaired no matter who is in power. All conventions of ethics, morality and truth have been broken, and it has been my experience that once those conventions go, it’s very easy for others to follow suit.

I’m begging Republicans, Democrats and independents to hear the voices of decent Americans and hold this country to a higher standard than has been displayed by President Trump and his minions who have turned a blind eye to all of the disgusting behavior that has been displayed by those who are supposed to be representing the people of this country. We need to vote for ethical leaders and those who want to improve the lives of Americans rather than enriching themselves. Wake up, America, we may lose everything we value the most! Deborah Ulric Southampton, N.J.
