DETROIT – With the big auto show here set to start Sunday, predictions are flying that Ford will introduce a new version of the iconic Mustang Bullitt GT.

Bullitt made the car an icon. Ford has offered a green Bullitt version of its Mustang in the past.

The 2018 Mustang GT customized to look like the one seen leaping over hills in San Francisco in the movie Bullitt will make a surprise debut, Auto

motive News reported.

And Autoblog reported that a charity car to be sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., could be a new Bullitt. The auction’s website says only that it is a “special new Ford Mustang to be sold with 100% of the hammer price benefiting Boys Republic.” Ford, for now, is being coy.

“We have no news to share today, but we’re excited about the interest in America’s favorite sports car,” Ford spokesman Dan Jones said.

Boys Republic is an all-boys school for troubled teens located in Chino Hills, Calif. McQueen spent time there at age 16 in 1946. He later served as an honorary board chairman. The actor was known to demand razors and jeans in his contracts so that he could donate them to the school.

Boys Republic hosts the annual Friends of Steve McQueen Car and Motorcycle Show at its Chino Hills campus, which draws thousands of spectators each summer in an effort to raise money for the school.

The website stevemcqueencarshow.com says the next event takes place June 2. “This year’s event is themed from the movie Bullitt and the 50th anniversary of the classic film” in which McQueen played a San Francisco cop in pursuit of a mobster.
