Americans support the right to choose

On the 45th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, USA TODAY’s opposing view by Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, “Americans are ready for meaningful limits on abortion,” overlooks the consistent finding that seven in 10 Americans overwhelmingly support the constitutional right to abortion. Americans don’t want politicians putting unnecessary restrictions on it.

In fact, two-thirds of U.S. adults support women having access to abortion care in their communities, and nearly six in 10 view the trend of state laws restricting abortion access as steps in the wrong direction. A strong 61% majority support a federal law to safeguard the legal right to abortion and prevent restrictions that push access to abortion out of reach.

One such law, the Women’s Health Protection Act, enjoys strong congressional support. This week, the Senate ignored public opinion and voted on a bill to ban abortion at 20 weeks.

Opposing an arbitrary abortion ban is not an extreme position; it’s constitutional and public consensus.

Those who do not want to allow abortions must adopt any unwanted children and take care of them through college. If someone does not want to adopt, then mothers have a right to select what they want to do with their pregnancy.

Women don’t have rights to kill chil- dren. That’s absurd.

“Reproductive rights.” What does that even mean? Any woman who’s not sterile can have a baby. I’m just against killing them. ... The “right to choose.” Choose what? Death?

If you get pregnant, give the baby a chance. Sorry to inconvenience you, but it’s sort of a big deal to kill people.
