Federer wins, caps return to No. 1

- From staff and wire reports

Roger Federer came to the ABN AMRO World Tournament aiming to secure a return to the top of the world rankings. He achieved that goal Friday. On Sunday, he put an exclamation point on a remarkable week by winning the tournament for good measure. Federer overpowered ailing Grigor Dimitrov

6-2, 6-2 in less than an hour to win his

97th career title. The 36-year-old Swiss’ third title at the Rotterdam, Netherlands, tournament comes a day before he officially returns to the top of the rankings, more than five years after he was last world No. 1. He will become the oldest person to hold the No. 1 position. Federer, who has 20 Grand Slam tournament titles to his name, said his next target is 100 career titles.

❚ Top-seeded Kevin Anderson won the first New York Open on Sunday, beating No. 2 seed Sam Querrey 4-6,

6-3, 7-6 (7-1) in Uniondale, N.Y., for his fourth career ATP Tour title.

❚ Petra Kvitova continued her remarkable comeback by beating Garbine

Muguruza in the Qatar Open final Sunday in Doha for her 13th win in a row and second consecutive title. The 27-yearold Czech, a two-time Wimbledon champion, needed another three-setter to beat the fourth-seeded Spaniard 3-6,

6-3, 6-4. It was Kvitova’s sixth win over a

top-10 player in 2018. Kvitova is set to return to the top 10 rankings Monday for the first time since she was the victim of a knife attack in her house in December

2016 that led to a lengthy layoff. ❚ Top-seeded Dominic Thiem of

Austria beat Slovenia’s Alijaz Bedene

6-2, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires for the second time in three seasons.
