Demi Lovato’s ‘Sober’

- – Maeve McDermott

What may be Demi Lovato’s most personal song of her career also appears to be an admission that she has relapsed after six years of sobriety. Lovato’s “Sober” arrived last week, a regretful ballad that has the singer admitting, “I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore.”

The 25-year-old has spent years battling substance abuse, disordered eating and bipolar disorder.

Yet, “Sober” is Lovato’s reminder that recovery is complicated. “It’s only when I’m lonely,” she sings. “Sometimes I just want to cave and I don’t want to fight.” For a singer who so often embodies strength in her music, Lovato’s confessions on “Sober” are all the more meaningful sung simply over quiet pianos and violins. There’s no happy ending, either — Lovato promises “to get help,” but the struggles the song portrays still seem to be Lovato’s present, not her past.
