“With help arriving from across Thailand and other countries, this challenging mission needs something that has been missing right from the start — a highly organized and well-coordinated command center with someone in charge who has the necessary experience and abilities in emergency and disaster response. It is obvious that Chiang Rai Gov. Narongsak Osotthanakorn ... is not that person. The operation under his leadership has been sloppy and disorganized without a proper ‘war room.’ ”

Anmar Mirza, CNN:

“I’ve been an active caver and cave rescuer for more than 30 years. ... This rescue in Thailand is one of the toughest I’ve seen. ... If where they are in the cave is safe from further flooding and the divers can supply them with food and care, they can live in the cave as long as necessary. If they cannot be safe from further flooding, then the only option may be the first and riskiest: diving them out.”

New Zealand Herald, editorial:

“They were a team when they went into the cave system and are probably a closer team now. For nearly 10 days they huddled together in darkness and silence deep underground. They would have lost track of time, sleeping fitfully, drinking water dripping from the roof of the cavern, growing more hungry and worrying they might not get out. Compared (with) that worry, the ordeal they now face must seem manageable.”

Tom Rogan, Washington Examiner:

“President Vladimir Putin of Russia should invite the (team) and their rescuers to the World Cup soccer final in Moscow on July 15. ... While the boys might not be able to attend the final so soon after this ordeal, the gesture would surely mean a lot to them. ... It must have been the team’s camaraderie forged on the football field that kept them going. That, and their passion for the greatest of all games: a life well lived. Let them come out of the darkness and into the World Cup lights.”
