Canadian retailer dumps Ivanka Trump line
But Hudson’s Bay says it’s not about politics.
Hudson’s Bay stores in Canada are ditching Ivanka Trump’s brand, but not, it says, because of politics.
The retailer confirmed that it “is phasing out this brand through the fall based on its performance.”
The chain has already removed President Donald Trump’s daughter’s brand from its Canadian website.
Next up: pulling the brand from Canadian stores.
The retailer is part of
Hudson’s Bay Co., whose other chains include Lord &
Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Each chain “makes decisions on its individual merchandise assortment based on brand performance,”
Hudson’s Bay said in a statement.
Representatives for Ivanka Trump did not respond to a request seeking comment. Her branded products include clothes, jewelry, handbags and shoes.
The move comes a month after Trump departed early from the meeting of the world’s seven most powerful nations that was being hosted by Canada. He had tweeted that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was “being so indignant” in tariff talks. Then, in a parting shot, Trump refused to sign a joint statement with the other leaders and blamed Trudeau in the process.
Hudson’s Bay Canada joins other retailers that have made similar moves on this side of the border, including Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, which already stopped selling Ivanka Trump’s fashion line.
The move comes amid signs of rising anti-American product sentiments in Canada.
On social media, users have promoted hashtags such as #BoycottUSA, #BuyCanadian and #VacationCanada – and their French equivalents in the bilingual nation.
