Heisman Trophy survey

Alabama QB Tagovailoa still leads

- COUNSELL BY PHILIP G. PAVELY/USA TODAY SPORTS

The race for college football’s most recognized individual award is basically down to three quarterbacks, according to the USA TODAY Network weekly Heisman survey.

Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa continues to hold a comfortable lead. He was named first by 14 of the 16 official Heisman electors who work for properties in the USA TODAY Network. Tagovailoa did, however, have an injury scare in Saturday’s outing against Missouri. He left the game in the third quarter with an apparent knee injury, but Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said afterward it was not serious.

Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State, meanwhile, solidified his position as Tagovailoa’s primary Heisman challenger. Haskins was named first on the remaining two surveys and second on nine. He threw for 412 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Buckeyes’ victory against Minnesota, bringing his season totals to 2,331 yards and 28 scores.

Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray, whose

team had a bye last weekend, is third. The rash of Week 7 upsets also appears to have shrunk the field of Heisman con-

tenders. Only three other players received mentions this week, none getting more than three points.
