1 in 88 quadrillion: So then there’s a chance ...

- Doyle Rice

So you weren’t the lucky one to bag the $654 million Mega Millions jackpot Tuesday night? Well, take heart: Powerball is offering a mega prize of its own Wednesday that is more within reach. Sort of.

The likelihood of taking home the $345 million Powerball is 292,201,388 to 1. Compare that with Tuesday’s jaw-dropping Mega Millions odds of 302,575,350 to 1.

The chances of winning both? About 1 in 88 quadrillion (that’s 15 zeros), according to CNBC.

In fact, you are 258 times more likely to be struck by lightning than capture a lottery crown, according to data from the National Weather Service. (The odds of being struck by lightning are 1 in 1,171,000.) At 1 in 3,748,067, you are 80 times more likely to be killed by a shark, the International Shark Attack File says. And at 1 in 700,000, women are 432 times more likely to give birth to identical quadruplets than win the lottery.

Then there’s this: Hitting the jackpot is a tad less likely than having President Donald Trump follow you on Twitter if he selects one account randomly from all accounts (about 1 in 261,000,000 tries), according to Cleveland19.com.

Yet, there are those whose numbers rise to the top: Three tickets – from California, Florida and Tennessee – prevailed in the $1.6 billion Powerball on Jan. 13, 2016, the biggest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.

Winners, against all odds.
