Have your very own Fright Night
Warm up for Halloween with these shows.
Just in time for Halloween, a bevy of blood-curdling shows are coming to haunt your dreams. As you find that perfect costume and steel yourself for trick-or-treaters, settle in for these macabre new and returning offerings. ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ (Netflix)
Now streaming: Hailed as the “first great horror TV show” and “the most traumatic horror story of the year” by critics, “Hill House” puts a fresh spin on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel (previously adapted for 1963 and 1999 movies). The 10-episode series, which stars Timothy Hutton, Carla Gugino and “The Bad Seed’s” Mckenna Grace, follows an unlucky family of seven that moves into a haunted mansion and eventually flees, but remains scarred as adults by the supernatural terrors they witness.
‘Lore’ (Amazon Prime)
Streaming Oct. 19: Based on Aaron Mahnke’s popular podcast, in which he tells real-life scary stories, Amazon’s anthology series is back for a second season of spine-tingling tales. Six episodes feature a mass-murdering duo of Irish immigrants, clockmakers racing to lift a curse and a killer living inside a family’s walls.
‘The Woman in White’ (PBS)
Premiering Oct. 21 (Sundays, 10
EDT/PDT; times may vary): Adapted from Wilkie Collins’ 1859 mystery, the five-part drama follows a young drawing teacher (Ben Hardy) who encounters a spectral woman on a moonlit road, only to learn she has just escaped from an insane asylum. Their meeting draws him into a web of lies, love and family intrigue in what’s considered one of the greatest thrillers of all time.
‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ (Netflix)
Streaming Oct. 26: This isn’t the “Sabrina” you grew up with. More than two decades after ABC’s “Sabrina the Teen- age Witch” first cast a spell, Netflix has cooked up a darker, creepier take on the “Archie” comic. Melissa Joan Hart passes the wand to Kiernan Shipka (”Mad Men”) as the half-witch who learns she has magical powers. And with CW hitmaker Greg Berlanti behind it, it’s only a matter of time until “Riverdale” meets Greendale.
‘Tell Me a Story’ (CBS All Access)
Streaming Oct. 31: Fairy tales get seriously twisted in this modern-day psychological thriller, which blends “The Three Little Pigs,” “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Hansel and Gretel” into a serialized story of murder and revenge. Adapted from Mexican television by Kevin Williamson (”The Vampire Diaries”), the series stars Kim Cattrall, Billy Magnussen and James Wolk.
