Nominate McSally for McCain’s seat

LETTERS LETTERS@USATODAY.COM

I’ve seen pundits saying Martha McSally may replace Jon Kyl in 2019 for John McCain’s Senate seat. I don’t have a problem with that move, but I will have a problem if she’s not challenged in the Republicans 2020 primaries. She did very poorly in the recent Senate election. Even Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., got more votes in 2012 than McSally. Kyrsten Sinema got almost two percentage points over McSally — with more than 38,000 votes. Many folks will blame McSally for being cozy with President Donald Trump. I blame her for not talking more on her achievements in the military and the House of Representatives. She also never strategized against Sinema, who moved from the far left to the center. In the 2020 open Senate race, can the Republicans trust McSally again with Maricopa County? I believe that former state Rep. Kirk Adams and state Treasurer Eileen Klein are better alternatives. Teddylee Gray Ocho Rios, Jamaica

It would be a very good move for Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and for the state to name Martha McSally to the Senate seat left vacant by Sen. John McCain.

American politics needs to focus on positive work instead of the hate that is being spewed by both sides of the aisle. Hari Seldon

Nobody who campaigned with a president whose election was under investigation, Donald Trump, and Donald Trump Jr. should be anywhere near the Senate.

Awarding McSally the consolation prize to salve butt-hurt Republicans is precisely the wrong thing to do. Mike Bates

Arizona should move quickly, now, to fill McCain’s seat with a true conservative and not another Republican in name only. Gary Swank
