What is CBD?

❚ CBD is short for cannabid­iol, a com­pound ex­tracted from cannabis plants. In most cases, CBD prod­ucts con­tain vir­tu­ally no THC, so they won’t get you high.

❚ Some en­thu­si­asts say CBD re­duces anx­i­ety, in­flam­ma­tion and seizures. Many doc­tors are skep­ti­cal of CBD be­cause it hasn’t un­der­gone the same kinds of med­i­cal tri­als as mod­ern medicine.

Le­gal sta­tus

In De­cem­ber, the FDA re­minded pro­duc­ers that spe­cific health claims about CBD are il­le­gal un­less the prod­ucts have un­der­gone fed­eral ap­proval and reg­u­la­tion. It also warned that adding CBD to food prod­ucts could vi­o­late food sup­ple­ment safety laws.
