Alabama police officer killed, another wounded in shooting

One police sergeant was killed and another officer critically wounded Sunday morning as they investigated a suspected car burglary.

Officials had two suspects in custody, one of whom was shot and received medical treatment.

Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith said the officers approached two suspects around 2 a.m. outside a downtown nightclub.

Smith said one suspect fired after being confronted by the officers.
