McConnell needs to do his job already

- LETTERS@USATODAY.COM

This is not how government is supposed to work. We have three branches of government, and each is supposed to do its job.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should not be able to block a piece of legislation because he believes the president won’t sign it. The House has passed legislation that would reopen the government. The Senate needs to take a vote on it and see where each senator stands. Send the legislation for- ward. Let the president veto it. Then, see whether Congress has the will to override the veto.

McConnell attempted to thwart every move President Barack Obama made. When Republicans came back into office, they had a president in the White House and a majority in Congress. If that combination could not get the wall built, why blame the Democrats?

End the shutdown. Open the government.
