Fierce battles fought over Islamic State foothold in Syria

Islamic State militants cornered in their last foothold in eastern Syria fought back with suicide car bombs, snipers and booby traps, slowing Kurdish fighters advancing under the cover of U.S.-led coalition airstrikes.
