A federal court ruled that Hoda Muthana, 24, who fled Alabama in 2014 to marry an Islamic State fighter in Syria, does not deserve special treatment as part of her quest to return to the U.S. with her 18-month-old son.

My heart breaks for all the women in the Middle East who are forced into this life — women who are abused, brainwashed, raped and discarded. But this woman chose this life. What makes her deserve a ticket out more than the women over there already dying under ISIS? Melanie Jones Walker

This is a tough situation. However, when she joined ISIS, if she was a U.S. citizen, she gave it up in my opinion. Yes, she was young and made a huge mistake, but that was her mistake, and actions have consequences.

She should first lecture to her current neighbors the virtues and freedoms we Americans enjoy. Proudly and loudly advocate for the country you’d like to come home to. Show us all how much you love your country. Bob Smith

The solution to this is simple. If she is a U.S. citizen, she has rights and those rights are protected. If it is found through a trial that she broke the law, then there are penalties.

This woman made a horrible mistake. She deserves a second chance. Take her passport, impose probation. She deserves to be punished, but she’s an American and deserves to come back home. I couldn’t even imagine the horrors that she saw. Kimberly Mabie

I think of her as a fan girl who went off on what she thought was a romantic adventure. I think we should let her come back, but I also think she needs supervision and deprogramming. If we deny her, we make her a poster child for American racism and xenophobia again. Why help ISIS recruit more kids?
