And you thought it was going to be a quiet summer on E Street.

On Friday, Bruce Springsteen offered up a new single “Hello Sunshine,” from his upcoming solo record, “Western Stars,” due June 14.

Springsteen is in a wistful mood on “Hello Sunshine.” He sings that he’s “had a little sweet spot for the rain” and that “if you fall in love with lonely you’ll end up that way.” But such a state is not really preferable. “Hello sunshine, won’t you stay,” The Boss asks. “Western Stars” comes from “inspiration in part from the Southern California pop records of the late ’60s and early ’70s,” according to press materials, and indeed, “Hello Sunshine” plays the part. It sounds like Harry Nilsson’s “Everybody’s Talkin’,” funneled through Jimmy Webb. The up-tempo brushes contrast nicely with the tentative piano and a mournful pedal steel, creating an alluring aura of disquiet.
