Preakness favorite Improbable draws No. 4 post at Pimlico

- Jason Frakes (Louisville, Ky.) Courier Journal

Improbable drew the No. 4 post and was made the 5-2 morning-line favorite during the draw for Saturday’s Preakness at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

A field of 13 was entered Wednesday for the Grade 1 Preakness, with post time set for 6:48 p.m. ET.

Improbable, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Mike Smith, is coming off a fourthplace finish May 4 in the Kentucky Derby. Baffert is trying to win the Preakness for the eighth time, which would break a tie with Robert Wyndham Walden for most by a trainer.

With Country House sidelined by an illness, this will be the first Preakness that doesn’t include the Kentucky Derby winner since 1996, when Grindstone was retired five days after winning the Run for the Roses because of a knee injury.

War of Will, who finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby, drew the No. 1 post position for the Preakness and is the second choice at 4-1.

Everfast, trained by Dale Romans, was a late addition to the Preakness field on Wednesday. Everfast enters off a fifth-place finish in the Pat Day Mile on Derby Day at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Some of the top contenders are missing, so we’ll take a chance,” said Romans, who won the 2011 Preakness with Shackleford. “(Everfast) is training like he did before the Holy Bull (second place at 128-1 odds).

“We’re going to try to wheel him back off the sprint and see if we can get a piece of it.”
