Others in GOP must follow Amash’s lead

-

The fact that one Republican in Congress has spoken out against President Donald Trump gives me reason to breathe a little easier. Trump’s cult-like following includes millions who are enamored by his cartoonish character.

He is a man-child who is, in my opinion, still trying to impress his father who is long gone. Now the most powerful man in the world is struggling with an underlying issue — bizarre behaviors that point to obstruction.

We need a voice to stand out. I thank Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., for doing so (in his call for impeachment) and opening the door for others. He will be on the right side of history. During the time of Watergate, John Dean exposed President Richard Nixon. Our Democracy needs Amash so that others in the GOP who know the truth will speak. Linda Gefen

What impeachable offense has Trump committed? In the United States, impeachment at the federal level is limited to those who may have committed “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” Which did Trump commit? Collusion? Obstruction? If there was clear evidence of obstruction, why didn’t special counsel Robert Mueller say so in his report?

Rep. Justin Amash reminds me somewhat of the late Sen. John McCain in his independence and courage to speak out against the majority of his party. As a Democrat whose party members argue openly, I am surprised that Amash has taken this stand. As an American, I am proud. Jeanne Nelson
