Have Congress do the trade deal with China
Brian Brenberg says in his column, “In trade talks with China, Trump needs to keep the pressure on instead of blindly trusting,” that China won’t follow through with the “promises” China’s negotiators tried to pledge to the U.S. I agree that the U.S. needs to put more pressure on China on a decent trade deal. We shouldn’t bend toward China’s will and accept empty promises if it doesn’t work in our favor to begin with. And I disagree with placing the blame on President Donald Trump. The blame should be placed on Congress.
In the Constitution, it states that Congress has the power to regulate commerce with foreign nations — and this trade deal is exactly within Congress’ jurisdiction.
I think Congress’ power of the purse works better in a scenario involving foreign economic agreements, as it’s multiple people representing the U.S., instead of a partisan president. Caleb Kowalewski Mundelein, Ill.
