Burrow, Hurts 1-2
The last two weeks of football before Heisman Trophy ballots must be submitted have the potential to alter the landscape thanks to plenty of high-stakes contests. For now, the race for the award is still Joe Burrow’s to lose, according to the latest USA TODAY Sports Network Heisman survey.
The LSU quarterback was the unanimous choice for the third consecutive time in our weekly poll of official Heisman electors who work for network properties. He surpassed the 4,000yard mark as the Tigers cruised to an easy defeat of Arkansas last weekend and now has 41 touchdown passes.
Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts remains in second place, though he committed a couple of turnovers that nearly proved costly in the Sooners’ narrow escape against TCU on Saturday. There’s no denying his dualthreat abilities, however, as he now has 3,184 yards by air and 1,156 by land for the season while accounting for 47 total touchdowns.
Two Ohio State Buckeyes tied for third this week. Both defensive end Chase Young and quarterback Justin Fields turned in high-impact performances on the big stage as the Buckeyes staved off Penn State. Young now has 161⁄2 sacks and 191⁄2 tackles for loss, while Fields has thrown for 33 touchdowns and run for 10 more.
Just three other players were included on the ballots. Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard received one second-place vote. Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor and Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley each earned a single third-place mention.
