Heisman survey

- Eddie Timanus

The primary candidates for the Heisman Trophy have one final chance to impress voters. But it would likely take a performance for the ages by somebody to unseat Joe Burrow.

The record-setting quarterback for top-ranked LSU is again the unanimous first choice in the USA TODAY Sports Network weekly Heisman Watch survey. He added three touchdown passes in Saturday’s romp over Texas A&M to bring his season total to 44.

But perhaps his most lasting impression in his final home game in Baton Rouge was made when he saluted the fans by spelling his name Burreaux on his pregame jersey, officially making him an honorary Louisianan for life.

Two other signal callers who will play for conference championships this weekend also appear destined for a trip to New York as finalists. Jalen Hurts of Oklahoma remains in second place. He was mentioned this week by all 21 official Heisman electors on the panel after playing a clean game in the Sooners’ convincing road win against Bedlam rival Oklahoma State. Ohio

State’s Justin Fields is now alone in third with eight second-place nods. He had a brief injury scare in the Buckeyes’ victory at Michigan but returned to deliver a couple of more touchdown passes.

Twp of Fields’ teammates remain on the radar as well. Defensive end Chase Young is in fourth place overall with running back J.K. Dobbins also getting a mention this week. The only other player to get a vote is Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor.
