Sanders’ $34.5M raised tops Dems in any quarter
The presidential campaign of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders announced Thursday that it raised $34.5 million in the final quarter of 2019 in Sanders’ bid for the Democratic nomination.
The total is the largest raised so far in a single quarter by a Democratic presidential candidate. In a press release, Sanders’ campaign emphasized the large number of donations – 1.8 million donations – as representative of the campaign’s grassroots support.
According to a video the Sanders campaign posted Wednesday on Twitter, more than 1.2 million people donated to the campaign. “Bernie Sanders is closing the year with the most donations of any candidate in history at this point in a presidential campaign,” campaign manager Faiz Shakir said.
According to the campaign, “teacher” was the most common occupation of donors, and the most common employers of donors were Amazon, Starbucks, Walmart, the U.S. Postal Service and Target. The average donation was $18.53, the campaign said.
Sanders was joined by former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and other Democratic presidential candidates whp also released their fundraising totals as the new year began.
Entrepreneur Andrew Yang’s campaign raised $16.5 million, a $6.5 million increase from the previous quarter. The campaign of Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, said it raised $3.4 million. Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., have yet to release their fundraising totals.
