Speed Freaks

- Godwin Kelly and Ken Willis cover NASCAR for The Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Aside from the obvious, your review of Speedweeks?

Godspeak (Godwin Kelly): As a whole, pretty tense racing. The Daytona 500 rain postponement was a bummer after a week’s buildup.

Ken’s call (Ken Willis): It was enjoyable watching some of the new guys (Tyler Reddick, Christopher Bell, etc.) and non-superstars (Ross Chastain, Ricky Stenhouse Jr.) get some attention.

Anything from Speedweeks that might carry over to the Western swing?

Godspeak: As we all know, the Daytona 500 is a unique animal, but I think the rookie class showed some of their skill. They were not afraid to mix it up with the veterans.

Ken’s call: Godwin makes a good point (no, really!). Particularly the three newcomers who won a lot in Xfinity. They’re not over their heads.

Godwin’s picks for Las Vegas

Winner: Kevin Harvick

Rest of top 5: Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin

First one out: Christopher Bell

Dark horse: Clint Bowyer

Don’t be surprised if: Harvick flexes muscles in an early statement race for Stewart-Haas Racing.
