Positive spin on stalled Record Store Day

- Gary Dinges

Record Store Day will look dramatically different this year because of the coronavirus.

Typically a one-day event, Record Store Day 2020 will be spread across three days: Aug. 29, Sept. 26 and Oct. 24.

As always, artists will drop special titles for Record Store Day, which that can be purchased at independent music stores across the country.

The event was originally set for April 18 and then shifted to June 20 before the latest dates were revealed.

“Record Store Day will look very different this year, but supporting indie record stores may be more important than ever,” organizers say on the Record Store Day website.

“We don’t know what sort of rules will be in place, or what sort of gatherings people will be in the mood for this year, so we’re focusing on the music and getting the really great titles on the RSD Official List this year into the stores and into your hands, in the most financially and socially responsible way.”

Here are some releases we’re looking forward to:

❚ Aug. 29: Two David Bowie exclusives will drop: “I’m Only Dancing (The Soul Tour 74)” and “ChangesNowBowie.” Both will be available on LP and CD.

When Record Store Day was initially delayed, “ChangesNowBowie,” which features previously unreleased work from the singer who died in 2016, was made available for streaming.

❚ Aug. 29: Gary Clark Jr. joins forces with Andra Day for “Pearl Cadillac,” which will be released on EP.

Clark had a big showing at this year’s Grammy Awards. He brought home four trophies for “This Land,” an album addressing racism in America.

❚ Sept. 26: The re-release of Britney Spears’ “Oops! ... I Did It Again” features remixes and B-sides from the 20-yearold album that helped make her a pop superstar.

❚ Oct. 24: “Classic Cash: Hall Of Fame Series – Early Mixes,” an album Johnny Cash first released in 1987, will be available on two LPs.

It was the prolific singer’s 74th album. He died in 2003.

❚ Oct. 24: Look for “My Name Is”/ ”Bad Guys Always Die” from Eminem during the third and final Record Store Day. Detroit’s homegrown rapper released his latest album, “Music To Be Murdered By,” in January and it was certified gold just two months later.
