HIGHLIGHT: DELAWARE
Wilmington: In the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, the Food Bank of Delaware distributed nearly 18 million pounds of food to families across the state – a record number, nearly 6 million more pounds compared with the same time period a year prior. “I have been here at the food bank since 2008. I was here right when the Great Recession hit, and what we have experienced over the past year cannot even compare to that,” Food Bank of Delaware spokesperson Kim Turner said. Before the pandemic, Turner said there were about 121,000 food-insecure Delawareans. Now, she expects there are more than 164,000.
