Friday, July 23

h Let the Games officially begin with the opening ceremony, which promises to be different this year with COVID-19 restrictio­ns in place. h Before the opening ceremony, rowing and archery get underway. U.S. rower Kara Kohler will start with heats in women’s single sculls. She won bronze in the event at the 2019 world championsh­ips.

Saturday, July 24

h Swimming gets started with the heats of the men’s 400-meter individual medley. Olympic silver medalist Chase Kalisz has made the team in both IMs (200 and 400). h Could a shooting athlete win Team USA’s first medal? Mary Tucker, who just finished her sophomore year at Kentucky, is poised for a breakout performanc­e in air rifle.

Sunday, July 25

h The world gets its first look at star gymnast Simone Biles, winner of four Olympic gold medals in the 2016 Rio Games, as women’s qualificat­ion begins. h Skateboard­ing joins the Olympic program for Tokyo, with the men’s street prelims and final kicking things off. h In women’s swimming, the USA will likely go head-to-head with Australia in the 4x100 free relay final.

Monday, July 26

h Brazilian Pamela Rosa was the top-ranked women’s street skateboard­er in the world last year, making her one of the favorites for gold. h In swimming, Katie Ledecky is the world record-holder and reigning Olympic champ in the women’s 400-meter freestyle.

Tuesday, July 27

h It’s the women’s team final in gymnastics, which the American women have won at the past two Summer Games. h All three medals will be up for grabs in softball, which returns to the Olympic program for the first time since 2008. The U.S. has won three of the four gold medals in Olympic history.

Wednesday, July 28

h Both gold medals for men and women will be awarded in the new Olympic sports of 3-on-3 basketball. h Team USA’s Carissa Moore is the reigning world champion in women’s surfing. Surfing will be held at Tsurigasak­i Beach in Chiba, about 40 minutes outside Tokyo. If conditions are good, the medals could be awarded Wednesday.

Thursday, July 29

h Simone Biles can make more history in the women’s all-around final. If she wins gold, she would be the first woman to repeat in the women’s allaround since Vera Caslavska did it 53 years ago. h In fencing, the Americans aim for a medal in the women’s team foil event. Lee Kiefer is the top American, ranked No. 5 in the world.

Friday, July 30

h American Connor Fields is the defending Olympic champ in men’s BMX, and Colombia’s Mariana Pajon seeks her third consecutiv­e gold in the event. h Two-time Olympic gold medalist Lilly King returns in the women’s 200-meter breaststro­ke, with medals up for grabs in the final.

Saturday, July 31

h The women’s 100-meter final is the final track and field event of the night. Javianne Oliver, Teahna Daniels and Jenna Prandini will represent the United States in the event. h On the final day of judo, the mixed team event makes its debut. Judo joined the Olympic program at the 1964 Games in Tokyo, for men. Women weren’t allowed in judo until 1992.

Sunday, Aug. 1

h In freestyle BMX, American Hannah Roberts is a favorite to win gold on the women’s side. h Tennis wraps up with gold medals in men’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. h In track and field, the men’s 100 final is the marquee event. American Trayvon Bromell won the event at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in 9.80 seconds.

Monday, Aug. 2

h In weightlift­ing, American Mattie Rogers (87-kilogram class) is a Pan American champ and holds eight U.S. records. h In track and field, it’s the final for the women’s 100-meter hurdles. The Americans swept the medals in Rio. Keni Harrison won the Olympic trials in a season-best 12.47 seconds.

Tuesday, Aug. 3

h The new sport of Olympic climbing gets underway with the men’s qualificat­ion. h American Grant Holloway is the 2019 world champion in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, which begin with Round 1. h It’s the day of the finals for the women’s 200. Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith won the 2019 world championsh­ip.

Wednesday, Aug. 4

h In the men’s 200 meters, American Noah Lyles is a favorite to win gold. He ran it in a world-leading 19.74 seconds to win the event at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. h It’s the first round of the women’s golf tournament. South Korea has the top three women in the Olympic rankings, led by Jin Young Ko, a two-time major winner.

Thursday, Aug 5

h In women’s canoe, Nevin Harrison seeks to become the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in canoe or kayak. It’s the day of the final for women’s C1 200 meters, and Harrison is the 2019 world champion in the event.

h In wrestling, the men’s 74-kilo weight class gets underway, with American Kyle Dake a favorite to win the gold medal.

Friday, Aug. 6

h In track and field, the finals for both men’s and women’s 4x100 relays will be held. h In beach volleyball, medals will be awarded on the women’s side. Americans April Ross and Alix Klineman were No. 2 in the world as of late May.

Saturday, Aug. 7

h The gold medal in men’s basketball will be awarded, with Team USA a favorite after winning the last three Olympic golds. In 2016, the Americans beat Serbia by 30 points in the final game. h Medals will also be decided in baseball, with the home team from Japan a favorite to win. South Korea won gold in the last Olympic tournament, in 2008 in Beijing.

Sunday, Aug. 8

h It’s the final day for the marathon, with the women running Saturday and the men on Sunday, at races that were moved from Tokyo to Sapporo due to the heat. h In women’s basketball, the Americans are the heavy favorites, having won every gold since 1996 and 49 consecutiv­e Olympic games dating back to 1992. h In women’s volleyball, the gold medal will be awarded, and the Americans have the No. 1-ranked team in the world.
