Kim to sit out season, focus on mental health

- Analis Bailey USA TODAY

Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim will sit out the 2022-2023 snowboarding competition season to focus on her mental health.

The American star and double gold medalist was the youngest woman to win gold in 2018 at Pyeonchang at age 17. Now at 22, coming off another gold in Beijing, Kim wants to “reset” after a “draining year.”

“I am definitely planning on competing at the 2026 Olympics. I will be taking a full season off of competition though, just for you know, my mental health just want to kind of reset,” Kim told Cheddar News. “I don’t want to get right back into it after such a fun but draining year at the same time, knowing that it was an Olympic year.”

After her first Olympic win, Kim took a season off to study anthropology at Princeton University and resumed after a 22-month break for an undefeated season.

“I just want t enjoy this moment, take it all in and then get back when I’m feeling ready,” said Kim.

“But as of now the plan is most definitely to go after a third medal.”

If Kim wins gold at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, she could become the first woman to win three gold medals in snowboarding history.
