Republicans take House; Democrats hold on to Senate
More than a week after Election Day, Republicans won majority control of the House of Representatives, a blow for Democrats and creating a major roadblock for President Joe Biden’s agenda for the next two years. Democrats managed to retain the Senate, holding a narrow lead in the divided chamber. Senate Republicans reelected Mitch McConnell as their leader and House Republicans chose to keep Kevin McCarthy as theirs. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Thursday they will step down from their leadership roles.
