Debt relief plan halted; experts urge students to ready for payments
Experts say students should prepare to start making payments on their school loans again after a federal appeals court issued an injunction Monday barring the Biden administration’s debt relief program until it’s resolved in court. It’s unlikely it will be resolved before the student loan repayment pause expires Dec. 31. Advocates are pressing the White House to extend that deadline. Steps that students can take to prepare include beginning to cut expenses and increase savings; checking eligibility for other government loan forgiveness programs; and seeing whether their employer offers student loan debt assistance.
