Barron Trump will not be a delegate at GOP convention

WASHINGTON – Barron Trump won’t be an at-large convention delegate for his father after all.

“While Barron is honored to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments,” said a statement Friday from the office of former first lady Melania Trump.

No further details were given as to why the youngest son of presumptive 2024 GOP nominee Donald Trump is opting out of the event.

The announcement came a day after Trump expressed approval of his son’s role at the Republican convention to be held July 15-18 in Milwaukee.

“He’s pretty young, I will say. He’s 17,” Trump said in an interview with Telemundo 51 Miami. “But if they can do that, I’m all for it.”

Trump misstated his son’s age; Barron Trump turned 18 in March.

The Republican Party of Florida announced on Thursday it had selected Barron as an at-large delegate, a part of the state’s 125-member delegation. Other family members – including Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump – also are delegates, and Eric Trump is the chair of Florida’s delegation.

Trump’s ongoing “hush money” trial will recess on Friday so that the former president can attend his son’s high school graduation ceremony.
