Prison Paradox:
This newly released book, “Prison Paradox,” holds clues to finding release.
Pastor Jason Wiersma, pastor of Mike Durfee State Prison’s Living Stone Prison Church in Springfield, SD, knows from personal experience that the physical walls of a prison aren’t the only things that can hold people in captivity.
Wiersma’s childhood battle with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) sent him careening down a path of anger and frustration. Through most of his teen years, he expressed his internal pain through rebellious behavior.
In his newly released book, “Prison Paradox,” Wiersma reflects on how his own battles trapped him in numerous ways, as well as the stories of others he’s met who feel confined by life situations. His writing highlights how God led him out of his own entrapment in hopes that his story helps others find the key to release from their own personal incarceration.
Wiersma’s book, heavily influenced by years of working with inmates, talks about his “prison” of low self-worth, the challenge of learning we can all be “really free,” and carefully navigating through life’s challenges to remain “free.”
“A paradox is a statement that defies logic,” Wiersma says. “Sometimes people experience more ‘incarceration’ outside physical prison walls.”
As part of the scriptural teachings and impactful stories in his book, Wiersma writes, “When we invite Jesus into our brokenness, our life’s journey becomes an overcomer’s story in which God gets the glory. We all need to hear such stories. Our journey through the brokenness of the past can become part of someone’s survival guide for their present.”
Each chapter of Wiersma’s book includes reflection questions to help readers reflect on their own personal experiences and as guidance for further Bible study.
Wiersma grew up in Northwest Iowa. God prepared and sent him into South Dakota’s prison system among diverse people, where he has learned much about the brokenness of the world and the power of God’s grace.
In 2011, along with his wife, Ruth, Jason planted the Living Stone Prison church inside the walls of Mike Durfee State Prison. He has pastored this congregation since its birth.
Wiersma’s greatest desire in life is to share his witness about how Jesus continues to save, heal, and deliver people from the power of darkness.
“My purpose for writing this book is to encourage readers to move forward in the freedom that Jesus Christ has earned for us,” Wiersma says.
