Valley City Times-Record

VCHS Choir and Band Fruit Fundraiser Underway

- By Leah Hochhalter VCHS Student Correspondent

The pandemic has meant many things to many people. To the students of Valley City High School Band and Choir it has meant the disappointment of not being able to travel with their classmates the past two years. But in true HiLiner spirit, the fundraising continues because planning is underway to bring back the tradition of having Valley City Public School compete in the Heritage Festival, a high school music competition.

The fruit fundraiser is an annual fundraiser for the music department that involves students selling fresh fruit to others. The fruit comes straight from California, and you don’t want to miss out. This heart-healthy fundraiser helps students earn individual funds to help cover their costs of travel.

The VCHS Music Booster parents are helping to coordinate this fundraiser, with this year’s chair being Diane Holchhalter. The VCPS Music Boosters support this fundraiser because eating plenty of fruits and vegetables has health benefits such as a decreased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers. The fruit is super fresh. When it arrives in Valley City, the students have to deliver it that day.

Even in a pandemic, with people in quarantine, online sales and social distancing, the students sold over 1,180 boxes of fruit which arrived in early December. This year, the students will be selling fruit from October 20 to November 9, with fruit to be delivered to you in early December. This is the perfect time to enjoy some fresh delicious fruit from Texas, Washington, California and Florida.

Since Valley City is here in the Midwest, most people will know it can be difficult to get fresh produce sometimes. I like apples, and my family and I have ordered apples from this fundraiser in past years. Let me just say that they are very good.

The Music Boosters partner with Minn-Tex for this fundraiser. MinnTex is a family company based in Windom, Minnesota which has set the standard for fresh fruit fundraising for over 35 years. They provide a high-quality fruit at reasonable prices.

Many of the same options will be available this year and a few options are returning including a medium sized box of mixed apples and a medium sized box of oranges. You will still be able to enjoy the Texas Rio Star grapefruit, the Fancy California Navel orange, California clementine, and a variety of apples. Just imagine the taste of fresh juicy California oranges in the bleak and cold ND winter. The fruit will arrive in early December, so it makes a great Christmas gift.

There was such great success with online ordering last year, that this will remain an option for this year as well. So contact your favorite band or choir student to order your fruit, or receive a secure link to order the fruit, from October 20 to November 9.

If you don’t know a student in band or choir, you can call the high school office at 8450483, extension 2, to connect with a music booster parent so that you don’t miss out on this great opportunity.

Let’s help the VCHS Hi-Liner band and choir students earn their way to an amazing adventure while nourishing our bodies in a healthy way.

If you are feeling in need of some fresh fruit this winter season, I wouldn’t miss out on this fundraiser.
