Irene Ann (Tootie) Flanagan, age 87, died Friday, November 11, 2022, at home. Irene was born on a farm near Oriska, ND on January 6, 1935, to William C. and Katherine A. (Cook) Winkler. She graduated from St Catherine’s High School in Valley City, ND and worked at a bank in Jamestown, ND and at Dakota Bank in Fargo, ND. Irene was united in marriage to Martin (Mick) Flanagan on October 17, 1959.
Irene was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and her life revolved around her immediate and extended family. Her favorite people were her grandchildren, and she was at her happiest attending their events and giving them her special handshake. Irene loved hosting holidays and every corner of her house was decorated for the next holiday. Irene was blessed with good friends, enjoyed traveling to visit family, shopping and going out to eat, and her smile was the biggest when she won the pot of monies during family card games. She spent many years leading Camp Fire, Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops; serving as an officer and President of Parent Teacher Associations; and volunteering in several roles for Church of the Nativity. Irene started working outside of the home cooking for her son and his NDSU fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, in his senior year. She then began working in the deli at Case Wise Foods, moving to the service desk where she enjoyed helping people. She retired with 20 years of service in 2009. Irene was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and served as an officer for 12 years, ending as Regent.
Irene is survived by her husband, Mick; three children, Michael (Tania) Flanagan, Denise Flanagan, and Holly (Ryan) Younggren; four grandchildren, Bridey (Lane) Hendren, Lena Flanagan, Cody Younggren, and Colton Younggren;
brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings Shirley (Walter) Schwehr, William (Francis) Winkler, Georgena (Roland) Mohn, Fred Winkler, and Douglas (Pearl) Winkler.
The funeral will be at 2:00pm on Friday, November 18, at Church of the Nativity, Fargo. On Thursday, November 17, a rosary will be recited by the Catholic Daughters of America at 5:30pm, followed by visitation at 6:00pm, and a prayer service at 7:00pm at Boulger Funeral Home. Visitation
